Acne is a skin condition characterised by red pimples on the skin, especially on the face, due to inflamed or infected sebaceous glands and prevalent chiefly among adolescents. Acneic skin is often caused by dead skin cells in the pores that are not shedding properly. Depending on its severity, acne can leave post-inflammatory discoloration and scarring. Adults can get acne in their 30s, 40s and 50s, and some will even develop it for the first time as an adult (referred to as adult-onset acne). Acne affects 25% of men and 50% of women at some point in their adult lives. It is most common in perimenopausal women.
